Introduction to the Online Library of Traditional Chinese Culture
The Songfeng Online Library of Traditional Chinese Culture is a digital platform under the Songfeng Library, dedicated to promoting the essence of traditional Chinese culture and advancing the widespread dissemination and in-depth study of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism. Rooted in the cultural mission and public welfare spirit of the physical library, Songfeng Online provides free access to e-books and related articles, aiming to create an open, shared, and pure spiritual space for the public.
This platform features a wide range of classical texts from the Confucian, Buddhist, and Daoist traditions, along with modern interpretive writings. It continuously collects, organizes, and publishes literature of academic value and contemporary relevance for traditional culture enthusiasts, researchers, and the general public to study and reference. We advocate the cultivation of virtue through books and the nurturing of humanity through culture—encouraging readers to rediscover the spiritual roots of the Chinese nation, develop personal character, and foster a positive social atmosphere through reading and reflection.
Adhering to its original public service intention, Songfeng Online operates without commercial interests or access barriers. It strives to harness the power of the internet to transcend geographical and temporal boundaries, bringing cultural heritage into the hearts of more people. We warmly welcome all those who care about traditional culture, love reading, and are committed to public service to join us in this quiet yet profound cultural renaissance.
May the fragrance of books carry on the torch of tradition;
May benevolent and virtuous souls join hands to celebrate and revive our cultural heritage.
What is Chinese Traditional Culture?
“Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism” are the very essence of traditional Chinese culture.
The eminent Ming Dynasty master Hanshan once said:
“Without understanding the Spring and Autumn Annals, one cannot navigate the world; without understanding Laozi and Zhuangzi, one cannot detach from the world; without practicing Zen, one cannot transcend the world.”
He also remarked:
“In human matters, I follow the human path and do not go beyond it, so in my youth I studied Confucius. Recognizing that human desires are the root of all suffering and aspiring to be free from them, I turned to Laozi and Zhuangzi. Observing that the Three Realms are mind-made and all phenomena are manifestations of consciousness, I came to understand the influence of the Ten Realms as mind-dependent, and thus I took refuge in the Buddha.”
In these few words, he clearly and succinctly illuminated the interrelationship among Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism.
Confucius authored the Spring and Autumn Annals and established Confucianism as a guiding philosophy for governing society—a fundamental discipline that all scholars were expected to study. Thus, in his youth, Master Hanshan began with the teachings of Confucianism.
Later, realizing that human desire is the root of suffering, he developed a sense of renunciation and sought to transcend the human condition, turning to the Daoist teachings of Laozi and Zhuangzi.
Eventually, upon understanding that both the Three Realms and the Ten Dharma Realms—as well as all phenomena—are shaped and transformed by consciousness, he took refuge in Buddhism.
Chinese culture, with its profound heritage, embodies deep philosophy and a harmonious worldview. As the old saying goes, “The sound of the stream is the vast tongue of the Buddha; the colors of the mountains are none other than the pure Dharma body”—all things in nature are teachings, and mountains and rivers can lead one to the Way. At the heart of Chinese culture lies the pursuit of “harmony between Heaven and humanity.” Whether in Qigong and martial arts, which emphasize internal and external cultivation, or in traditional Chinese medicine, with its principles of Yin-Yang balance and the Five Elements, one sees a profound understanding of natural laws.
In music and the arts, there is the ideal of “transmitting from heart to heart,” reaching a state of “forgetting both self and object,” where emotion merges with scenery, and meaning is expressed through form. The three teachings—Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism—complement one another, interweaving the realms of daily ethics and spiritual cultivation. As it is said, “All is the Dao, all is Chan (Zen)”—Chinese culture is not only a way of life, but also a path of inner refinement and a philosophy of being. It reflects a harmonious understanding of the relationship between the self and the universe, and a manifestation of profound wisdom.
